SEO Checklist for Schools

For primary, secondary, grammar, private and international schools, anywhere.

Cover and a sample page of the SEO Checklist for Schools by Mile SEO.

The problem

Most school websites lose families in the same few places: term dates and fees locked in PDFs, a Google Business Profile nobody has claimed, admissions dates hidden in images, and AI assistants repeating outdated facts.

This checklist walks through each one in plain language, with an owner for every task, so a head can hand it out and the office can work through it.

Three items, as they appear in the checklist

  • 02.1

Publish essential information as web pages, not PDFs

Term dates, fees, admissions criteria, uniform and menus. PDFs rank poorly, break on phones and are hard for AI answers to read.

  • 04.2

Choose the most precise primary category

For example Primary school, High school, Private school or International school. Add secondary categories after that.

  • 09.2

Fix wrong facts at the source

AI answers repeat your website, your Google profile, government directories and review sites. Correct them there.

Frequently asked questions

Do small primary schools need SEO?
Yes. Parents check term dates, admissions and nearby schools online before they call. For a small school it is often a few targeted fixes or one-time adjustments.
Does a website redesign help a school’s SEO?
Only if it keeps what already works. Redesigns often drop old addresses, term-date pages and links. Redirect every old URL and keep key information as real web pages.
What do parents search for before choosing a school?
Mostly practical facts: term dates, admissions criteria, catchment, fees, inspection reports, open days and the school’s name with “reviews”. Pages that answer these get the most visits.
